Oil Spill in San Francisco Forces Beach Closures on Thursday, November 8, 2007

Due to the collision of a container ship and a support column of the western span of the Bay Bridge on Wed., Nov. 7th, 58,000 gallons of fuel spilled into the bay.

Slicks from this spill are being spotted around the bay, including Tiburon and Marin. Animals are threatened by the spill. Beaches in San Francisco Bay are closed, and beaches outside the bay, including Dead Man's and Ocean Beach are all threatened to be fouled by this spill in the next few days.

The U.S. Coast Guard is working on containing the spill, but obviously have not been able to fully contain it and discussions are underway on the next actions. There may be opportunities to help with oil spill cleanup, as well as with saving threatened animals. Check the news sites frequently for updated information.

DO NOT SURF AT THE CLOSED BEACHES, AND CHECK FOR INFORMATION ON OCEAN BEACH AND OTHER SPOTS BEFORE HEADING OUT FOR A SESSION!
