Tom Jones Paddles Through Northern California To Raise Plastic Pollution Awareness

Photos in SurfPulse Photo Gallery.

California Paddle 2007 is a world record-breaking expedition by Tom Jones, an extreme endurance athlete and environmental activist. Tom will become the first person in history to paddle the entire 1250-mile coast of California on nothing more than a 14-ft. paddleboard.

The next leg of his journery begins from Half Moon Bay on Sat., Sept. 8th. At 7:00 A.M., Jones will start from the Pillar Point Harbor boat ramp and paddle south from Maverick's for 10+ miles. If you're so inclined, give him some company.

The following info is from Tom Jones' website...

Join the Campaign for a Plastic-Free Ocean

Join me in the California Paddle 2007 event and the Campaign for a Plastic-Free Ocean. Together we have the power to rid the oceans of this deadly pollution…for our environment, for our children... for our future.

Did you know that there is enough plastic in the ocean to cover 2/3 of the State of California with a sheet of plastic? Plastic pollution is a problem that affects all of us. It kills countless marine mammals, birds and other organisms and it spoils the beauty of our beaches.

I intend to do something about it.

I’m Tom Jones and I have dedicated my life to environmental and youth causes. As an extreme athlete, I have taken on some of the biggest challenges imaginable to draw attention to worthwhile projects. I have set world records by running the entire length of California three times and even across the United States at a marathon-a-day pace for causes I believe in.

And this year, I will do something even more challenging. I will paddle the entire length of the California coast with nothing more than a 14-ft. paddle board. This project, called California Paddle 2007 will mark the first time this has been done by any human being.

Why am I doing it? To draw attention to the problem of plastic pollution in our oceans and to empower people to do something about it. It's all part of The Campaign for a Plastic-Free Ocean. We want to change corporate, government and individual behavior to reduce the pollution and restore the ocean.

DONATE TO THE CAUSE.
