Maverick's 100-Foot Wednesday Story in San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday, January 31, 2007

In the San Francisco Chronicle, veteran surf-scene sportswriter Paul McHugh recounts the harrowing story of safety patrollers Shawn Alladio and Jonathan "JC" Cahill facing 100-foot waves on jet skis at Maverick's on Nov. 21, 2001. The article is exciting and a recommended read during the big-wave season and the 2007 Maverick's contest waiting period.

San Francisco Ocean Beach Erosion Solution

A San Francisco Chronicle article today reports on how the Army Corps of Engineers has taken measures to stop the erosion of Ocean Beach south of Sloat Boulevard and actually widening the beach by one meter since June 2005. The sand dredged each year from the Golden Gate shipping channel is now being dumped a half-mile from shore to create a sandbar that then contributes sand to that portion of Ocean Beach. Simply put, a recycling of sand. No analysis reported on its effect on surfing conditions.

Children's Book by Surfer/Shark Attack Survivor

Here's the perfect Christmas stocking stuffer and Hanukah gift for the grommets and their parents. In 1998, Jonathan Kathrein was attacked by a great white shark at Stinson Beach. Now at age 24, Mr. Kathrein has published a children's book, Don't Fear the Shark, illustrated by childhood friend Rob Singler, Jr.

Based on his experience with the shark attack and his later, and continuing, efforts at teaching conflict resolution, Mr. Kathrein and Mr. Singler have created a book that pursue and combine the themes of environmental care, personal responsibility, and conflict resolution.

Buy the book at Amazon.

Keep an eye on SurfPulse for an upcoming interview with the author.

Also, if you see someone acting suspiciously, or in the act of a crime, do not confront the suspect(s) yourself, but call the police immediately and be prepared to give details of location and suspects' appearance, vehicles, and license plate numbers.

Sewage Overflow on Great Highway in SF on Monday, November 13, 2006

A neighborhood heads-up that a sewage overflow occurred on the Great Highway, adjacent to Ocean Beach, in San Francisco during the heavy rains on Monday night, November 13, 2006. The water treatment plant and/or the local runoff drainage system had some sort of failure and the result was a blown-open manhole cover and overflow onto the Great Highway. Crews cleaned up the streets overnight. However, the ocean water quality is probably very poor. A 2- to 3-feet deep trench dug through the sand at Kelly's Cove from the wall towards the ocean was a clear indicator that a large amount of sewage was dumped onto the beach. Here's a photo in SurfPulse Photo Gallery.

Yet one more reason to carry your car key WITH you:
On Sat., Oct. 7th, between 9:00 and 11:00 A.M., a silver Subaru wagon was broken into at the Sloat Blvd. parking lot. The victim believes that the perpetrator(s) saw him leave his key in the wheel well of his car. When he returned from his surf session, his key was in the same place he left it, but his wallet and money clip were gone from his pants. Later, a credit card was used at a gas station.

If you witnessed this theft and have any information, please contact SurfPulse and we will pass along the information to the victim.

Shark Sighting at Dunes State Beach, Half Moon Bay

Dunes State Beach - On July 23, 2005 Andrew S. was surfing at Dunes State Beach, Half Moon Bay. It was 8:30 PM and he had been in the water about one hour. There was a heavy fog and the sea was calm and glassy with a sandy ocean bottom that was 15 feet deep. Water temperature was in the upper 50s with visibility limited to less than 3 feet.

Andrew recalled: "There were 3 seals near me and at one time in between me and the shore. That might have possibly been a warning. I was paddling out towards an incoming set when I saw a large dark grey, triangular fin, approximately 2-2.5 feet out of the water. It was moving slowly towards my position. I turned around and paddled as fast as I could, legs kicking, towards shore. I caught a wave and turned around to see the fin where I had been just previously. It was still moving slowly and then it submerged after a few seconds."

Caution should be exercised when utilizing this location for your ocean water activities. Please report any sighting, encounter or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

Shark Sighting at Linda Mar Beach, Pacifica

Linda Mar Beach - On July 16, 2005, Peter O. and a friend were surfing at Linda Mar Beach near Pacifica. The sky was partly cloudy and there was an increasing westerly wind. It was 6:00 PM and they had been in the water about 1.5 hours. There were white caps on the sea surface with a 3-4 foot surf. The water was 6-10 feet deep with numerous sandbars and visibility of 1-2 feet. Two pinnipeds were observed inside the lineup about 20 minutes before the encounter.

Peter recounted: "I was surfing with a friend at Linda Mar and we were getting to the point where we were ready to go in so we were waiting for the next set of waves to take one in. During this lull I was scanning the horizon looking for waves when I saw the shark moving very fast. It suddenly jumped completely out of the water approximately 10 yards from my position on the outside of the lineup. It cleared the surface of the water by about a foot and was flipping its body in a swimming motion in the air before splashing back down. The shark's belly and side fins were facing me as it came out of the water and it twisted in the air to land on its left side giving me a good view of its dorsal fin and tail. It was not a very big shark, probably a little over six feet with a dorsal fin of about 10 inches and I am guessing that it was a juvenile. One other guy saw this as well and we both looked at each other and said 'big fish' simultaneously. I told my buddy who said he saw the splash but didn't see the shark itself and we decided to paddle in. I have been surfing for more than ten years and this is the first time I have ever seen a shark. It was one of the most powerful and scary-beautiful things that I have ever seen."

Caution should be exercised when utilizing this location for your ocean water activities. Please report any shark sighting, encounter or attack to the Shark Research Committee.

Another Surfer's Car Gets Broken Into At Ocean Beach, San Francisco on Sunday, July 17, 2005

On Sunday afternoon on Great Highway at Ortega, someone described as a white male, approximately 5'8", who was wearing a red baseball cap backwards, broke into a silver pickup truck. The owner, a local surfer, said that he has his key on him in the water. So, the thief smashed a window on the truck's camper shell to gain entry to the truck. The goon took several items from the truck, including a cell phone and wallet. Luckily, the owner of the truck was able to cancel his credit card within 30 minutes, so the goon was only able to charge approximately $30 in gas.

If you have any information about this break in, please contact us and/or the San Francisco police department. And if you see someone suspicious on the Great Highway, don't hesitate to report them to the authorities and/or to let them see that you see them.
